Fresh Start Borders is a charity that helps people across the Scottish Borders who have been homeless and are moving into their first permanent tenancy. We donate starter packs of basic household essentials (but not furniture) to families and individuals as they move into their new home, giving them a helping hand to maintain their tenancy until they are able to equip their homes themselves.
The charity was set up in 2008 as an initiative of the Selkirk Council of Churches and we have received assistance from the Scottish Churches Housing Action and grant funding from other agencies. These include Awards for All, Children in Need and Selkirk Rotary Club.
We are all local volunteers and depend on donations from the public to provide the items for our starter packs.
We receive applications for starter packs from Scottish Borders Council, local housing associations and other organisations and charities working with people who have been made homeless, such as Border Women’s Aid and Penumbra. The service is confidential and we are never given the names of the people receiving our starter packs, which are collected and distributed by staff from the referring agency.
Our starter packs
- make an immediate impact on the life of someone in our community who is facing hard times
- help people to stay in their tenancies
- encourage recycling and waste-reduction
